Our History

John has been a student of the stock market for as long as he can remember. In high school some of his hobbies included charting stocks, watching the ticker tape, and reading the Wall Street Journal. His passion drove him towards helping people accumulate savings and wealth and in 1977 he started his own business aimed at setting up retirement accounts for local Janesville teachers. Over the years, his business shifted from selling an investment to giving advice and managing money for all types of people, even former co-workers from General Motors. That’s right, all while starting a business and having a family, he also got in his 30 years at Janesville’s car manufacturing plant.

Fast forward 30 years to 2007. His daughter, Sheena Hanson, graduated college with a degree in Finance. She grew up having conversations about money, even giving speeches about ‘Bull and Bear markets’ in elementary school. Going into business with her Dad was anticipated to be a natural fit, and it was. After college she earned her professional Certified Financial Planning designation (CFP) and worked for an outside firm for several years before joining Uncommon Cents Investing.

Uncommon Cents Investing continues to grow in size and in the number of clients we serve. A lot has changed over the years, but the mission has not. John and Sheena aim to help people improve their lives through sound investment management and financial planning.
